Final Fantasy 16 on PC Shows Signs of Life, With Producer Yoshi-P Saying It Will Run Best on an SSD

First Details on Final Fantasy 16’s Promised PC Port Since Initial Announcement

The developers of Final Fantasy 16, Hiroshi Takai, Takeo Kujiraoka, and Naoki Yoshida (affectionately known as Yoshi-P by fans), recently provided an update on the game’s PC port during an interview with Famitsu, as noted by Genki_JPN on Twitter. This marks the first word on the PC version since its announcement last September.

When asked about the recommended PC specifications, Yoshida advised, “Details will be announced in due course. However, I would like you to prepare an SSD. In FF16, a game where loading speed is critical, an HDD would be difficult to use.” He added, “Of course, we will do our best to optimize as much as possible, but we cannot overcome the hardware barrier alone, so please consider that an SSD is a must.”

This advice is understandable, as the demand for fast storage and reduced load times has been a significant technological advancement in the current console generation. High-capacity SSDs are now widely available and affordable. The days of building a PC with a modest 256 GB solid-state boot drive and a 1 TB Western Digital Blue hard drive for storage are quickly becoming a thing of the past, especially with the advent of 2 TB M.2 drives.

Hearing any news about FF16’s PC port is a relief, as it seemed to have been forgotten. As of now, Square Enix and Rockstar remain among the few major third-party publishers that delay their PC ports compared to console release dates. This ongoing practice has been a source of disappointment, especially with the delayed PC versions of Grand Theft Auto 6 and FF16. It also somewhat marred the otherwise spectacular reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Despite the delays, the excitement to eventually play these games remains high. Another noteworthy detail from the Famitsu interview is that Square Enix does not plan to extend FF16’s story beyond its two DLC packs. Yoshida mentioned, “The development team for FF16 has been disbanded, except for the DLC team. We don’t imagine that we’ll create a sequel or spin-off to FF16.”
