How to Complete “Off the Pilfered Path” in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Upon completing “Mercy among Thieves,” players will encounter Hugo again during “Off the Pilfered Path” in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This quest can be intricate, especially if you haven’t fulfilled its prerequisite missions.
The quest description for “Off the Pilfered Path” is vague, simply instructing you to “offer Hugo guidance.” A straightforward approach involves using a Makeshift Goal Key to unlock Hugo’s cell, though this triggers a confrontation with guards. To avoid this, it’s advisable to engage with Brefft, a character tied to another essential quest.
To follow this path, first complete “Tolled to Rest,” which involves acquiring the Ancient Battleground Key. This action prompts Brefft’s appearance in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Additionally, you might need the Battahl resident permit from “Ser Menella’s Nation of Lambent Flame” quest (located in Rockmouse’s Burrow) to prevent guards at Bakbattahl Gaol Guardhouse from attacking you on sight.
While bribing guards might seem like an option, it typically doesn’t yield results. Instead, focus on talking to Herman after completing “Shadowed Prayers.” Herman will hint that someone in the gaol, specifically Brefft, possesses valuable information. However, Brefft won’t appear without completing “Tolled to Rest”; otherwise, another character will temporarily take his place. Head left near Hugo’s prison to initiate a dialogue with Brefft.
Continue conversing with Brefft until you receive a notification indicating you’ve learned the Coral Snakes’ new hideout. Inform Hugo of this information, then check in with him the next day. A guard will report his escape. Find Hugo near the Ancient Battleground, where you must act swiftly to rescue him. Ascend to the battleground’s peak to confront and defeat Lanzo.
After defeating Lanzo, Hugo will appear, and you’ll have the choice to assist him further. If you opt to help, Hugo will require assistance in finding a job.
Choosing a Job for Hugo in Dragon’s Dogma 2 “Off the Pilfered Path”
Upon escaping jail, Hugo seeks employment. Known options include Isaac’s Wares and Rose Chateau Bordelrie. To offer Hugo a job at Isaac’s Wares, complete “Short-Sighted Ambition,” triggered by speaking with the merchant at Isaac’s Wares in Bakbattahl. Note that this choice entails risks, particularly if you decide to give Isaac the real copy of Transference of Souls Tomes, leading to a less favorable quest outcome.
Alternatively, players have reported being able to secure Hugo a position at the Bordelrie, typically after completing “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Whichever job you choose, return to Hugo at the Ancient Battleground to confirm your decision.
Once Hugo is settled in his new role, check in periodically to see how he’s faring. While employment at Bordelrie may not offer substantial rewards, Hugo at Isaac’s Wares provides shop discounts, a beneficial perk.
By navigating these steps, you can successfully complete “Off the Pilfered Path” and ensure Hugo’s well-being in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
